The Truth About The Enlightenment Project

The ideas of reason, individualism, liberty, and humanism are the four "masks" of the Enlightenment Project which was spearheaded by the 18th century French philosophes. The purpose of these masks was to conceal the true nature of the project from the masses. What lay underneath the masks was something much more radical and revolutionary.

The Enlightenment Project envisaged a crushing down of every landmark of culture. The philosophes dreamed of political movements that would sweep across the land like a plague of locusts and devour all the philosophies of the past, and every political and religious institution. Once the past was erased, they believed, the work would begin for creating a new world order.

The French Revolution of 1789 and the Soviet Revolution of 1917 can be seen as an outcome of the ideas and ambitions of the Enlightenment philosophes.

Anoop -- As you've done for many months now, you give the impression that you loathe liberal philosophy and values. You write as harshly as any Marxist or Moslem critic and enemy.

You say: "The ideas of reason, individualism, liberty, and humanism are the four 'masks' of the Enlightenment Project" which makes these four great values and ideals sound like frauds and great evils. You say: "The purpose of these masks was to conceal the true nature of the project from the masses," which also makes these four sound terrible.

Historically I know of no evidence that the Enlightenment liberals were intellectual frauds ex ept their being careful not to reveal the extent of their atheism -- which would have resulted in great personal and professional suffering, if not political execution. Remember that they had to contend with a much stronger version of the raw evil of religion and Christianity which has made Western life hell for 2600 years now.

You also say: "The Enlightenment Project envisaged a crushing down of every landmark of culture," and that liberalism "would sweep across the land like a plague of locusts and devour all the philosophies of the past". I think any high-quality reader would logically conclude that you despise and reject liberal philosophy and culture at a very high level.
